Digital Dancehall
Electronic reggae dancehall, often called digital dancehall or ragga, revolutionized Jamaican music in 1985 with the release of Wayne Smith’s hit "Under Mi Sleng Teng." This high-energy genre completely replaced traditional live studio bands with cheap, futuristic synthesizers and programmed drum machines like the Casio MT-40. The resulting sound is defined by sharp, repetitive electronic riddims, deep synthesized basslines, and fast-paced, rhythmic vocal delivery known as "toasting." Stripping away the organic warmth of classic roots reggae, electronic dancehall created a raw, minimalist, and club-ready soundscape that laid the foundation for modern global genres like hip-hop, reggaeton, and UK grime.
