This record contains high-energy Jazz Fusion (often called Jazz-Rock, Jazz-Funk). Larry blends the complex improvisations and harmony of jazz with the raw power, heavy distortion, and driving rhythms of rock. It sounds like a cross between Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix.
Larry Coryell was one of the very first musicians in the late 1960s to plug an electric guitar into a rock amplifier and play jazz. He was famous for his absolute fearlessness on the instrument, possessing incredible acoustic fingerpicking technique alongside a heavy, rock-god electric distortion tone. This was his premier powerhouse fusion group formed in 1973. The band featured legendary jazz drummer Alphonse Mouzon, whose explosive, funky drumming style perfectly matched Coryell’s wild guitar work.
Expect blistering, lightning-fast electric guitar solos, complex time signatures, funky syncopated drum beats, and cosmic 1970s synthesizer textures.
